comment in the Guardian

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/jul/31/us-debt-congress-tea-party?commentpage=last#end-of-comments

The Obama argument is along the lines of "we must make the mortgage payment and feed the children" and the Tea Party seems to be "if we default, that will show them!"

The debt ceiling is not a new agreement on borrowings. It is entirely necessary to be be able to meet existing obligations without exponentially printing money Zimbabwe style.

If the Tea Party ethos is to bite, they will have to raise the debt ceiling, while enacting policies that reduce spending. Because they refuse to raise taxes, they will have to starve the children. If they were in power they could do that. The Tea Party are not in power but are hamstringing the Republican effort to put a lid on spending.

A default causing the ongoing costs of the existing debt to multiply is not in the interests of reducing debt. It is a Russian Roulette with the economy they play, with 5 bullets in the chamber.

Yep, there seems to be a lot of education geared toward kids learning this. Hopefully not brainwashing. :) It's pretty fun actually, and you can create some amazing things with robotics toys today like the lego mindstorms.

Obama helps me feel like its OK to be an American again.
I do think the Nobel was premature but I have a good feeling that he isnt going to let it go to his head and he will continue to fight for peace.

I love the way the skeptics balance their argument on 1 million "good" American jobs, when if you consider that this is the first I have heard of a "peak in 1998" rest assured I balance that risk against the inundation of many countries in the Pacific Ocean and quite a bit of South Asia as well. Those "good" old jobs do not seem that vital when compared to the destruction of over a billion lives.

Official government measurements show that the world’s temperature has cooled a bit since reaching its most recent peak in 1998.

That’s given global warming skeptics new ammunition to attack the prevailing theory of climate change. The skeptics argue that the current stretch of slightly cooler temperatures means that costly measures to limit carbon dioxide emissions are ill-founded and unnecessary.

Proposals to combat global warming are “crazy” and will “destroy more than a million good American jobs and increase the average family’s annual energy bill by at least $1,500 a year,” the Heartland Institute, a conservative research organization based in Chicago, declared in full-page newspaper ads earlier this summer. “High levels of carbon dioxide actually benefit wildlife and human health,” the ads asserted.
